heirloom quilting designs

Welcome to the website of Heirloom Quilting Designs, founded by Joanie Zeier Poole, an award-winning quilt maker, teacher, graphic designer and author. If you share a passion for machine quilting, you have come to the right place!

Using her elegant style of Heirloom Machine Quilting performed on a regular sewing machine, Joanie has produced quilts (in the gallery) that are receiving awards at national competitions. Through the pages of her website, this inspiring entrepreneur introduces you to who she is, and how she built this career. Read about her workshops and lectures that educate and encourage students. Find free, tried and true advice for Machine Quilting on the Tips page. View the products from Joanie's extensive portfolio of designs for quilting, appliqué and embroidery displayed throughout this website. Some patterns are available exclusively on the Products page and at Joanie's personal appearances; other products are available from leading manufacturers listed.

This website is intended to be a resource for you to come back to again and again. Find information about shows, news of the quilting world, as well as useful tips for machine quilting. So, bookmark this page and return often for updates on new products, books, and awards, where you can meet Joanie, and see her quilts.

hot flashes

This winter, while we received a record breaking 100 inches of snow; I began using my embroidery equipment for my sewing machine. It is a completely new experience. I still have much to learn about the stabilizers and hoops, etc… I used a new software, “Creative DraWINGS”, that translates my Adobe Illustrator drawings into stitches the machine embroider.

In March, CBS Sunday Morning featured a segment on quilting in the US. Here is a link to the segment if you missed the show. Go to http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/sunday/main3445.shtml and type in Quilts for Sale in the search box. You will see Ricky, Alex, and Karey, and guess who they showed as the quintessential quilt fabric shopper? I have to say I was proud to represent each and every one of you; digging deep in my pocketbook to do my part for this $4,000,000,000.00 industry!

My newest quilt, Lea’s Choice, was awarded Second Place, Appliqué at the 2008 AQS show in Paducah! In addition,it was awarded Excellence in Machine Quilting Award at 2008 Road to California, and Best Machine Quilting, Traditional Quilt, 2007 Pacific International Quilt Festival! Take a closer look and read the whole story in the gallery.
